What is a franchise fee?
A franchise fee is the one-time, upfront payment a franchisee makes to the franchisor for the right to open under its brand — the entry ticket, disclosed in Item 5 of the FDD. It typically covers training, site assistance, and opening support, and it is usually a small slice of the total investment. It is separate from ongoing royalties, which continue for the life of the agreement.
Judge a fee against what arrives for it (training depth, opening support, protected territory) and against the whole Item 7 stack — a modest fee on top of a heavy build-out is still a heavy investment. Discounts exist in real systems too: veteran programs and multi-unit schedules commonly reduce the per-unit fee.
