What is franchise validation?

Last reviewed July 6, 2026

Validation is the due-diligence step of calling a system's franchisees — current and former — to test what the sales process told you. Item 20 of the FDD lists them with contact information precisely so you can. Ask about real ramp-up costs, time to first owner pay, and whether support shows up; call owners the franchisor did not curate. Ten honest calls outweigh any brochure.

Structure beats volume: same questions to every owner, notes kept, and at least two calls to franchisees who exited (their numbers are in Item 20's former-franchisee list). If multiple owners in one system decline to talk, treat the silence as an answer — healthy systems produce owners who volunteer their story.
