Franchises Opportunity

What is absentee franchise ownership?

Last reviewed July 6, 2026

Absentee ownership means owning a franchise unit without working in it — a hired manager runs daily operations. Semi-absentee means a reduced schedule, commonly pitched at 10–15 hours a week alongside a day job. Both models work only when a manager's full salary is in the budget from day one, and many franchisors restrict or prohibit absentee ownership outright — Item 15 of the FDD states the participation requirement.

The semi-absentee pitch is the most oversold idea in franchise sales: the model is real, but the pro-forma you're shown often omits the manager's wage that makes it possible. Ask validation calls how many owners in the system actually run semi-absentee profitably, and what they pay their operators.
